Site and operating requirements

  • Start with one labelled small batch. Confirm clean input water, crop identity, hygiene, species-specific feed advice and a disposal plan.
  • Measure dry matter and all water, energy, labour and discard costs; fresh weight alone does not prove feed gain.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Scale, dated labels, thermometer, clean sampling tools, water/energy records and laboratory feed analysis; pH/moisture equipment where the crop requires it.

Output and operating conditions

Measure actual harvest and dry matter; coverage can take 1–2 weeks and harvest readiness 2–3 weeks in the documented conditions.

KAU example; published quantities are not a guaranteed Gulf-climate yield. Water temperature matters more than assuming outdoor suitability.

Parts, quantities and dimensions

PartQuantitySpecification / dimensions
Level lined bed2 × 1 mBrick edge, protected watertight liner; approximately 10 cm water depth with freeboard.
Soil and documented nutrient inputs25 kg soilKAU example: 5 kg cow dung + 30 g rock phosphate; require advisor-approved hygiene/nutrient handling.
Healthy culture and monitoring500 g/m²Clean starter; thermometer, pH meter, sieve, freshwater rinse and shade as needed.

Preparation and component checks

  • Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
  • Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.

Procedure

  1. 1

Choose a protected level site and confirm an advisor-approved nutrient and feed-hygiene plan.

  2. 2

Prepare the 2 × 1 m bed, remove sharp debris, lay the liner and secure the edges.

  3. 3

Add the documented soil and approved nutrient inputs, fill to about 10 cm water depth and record actual water volume.

  4. 4

Add healthy culture at 500 g/m². Monitor water temperature and pH; the referenced ranges are 20–35°C and pH 5.5–7.

  5. 5

Let the mat establish. Harvest with a sieve without overcrowding and rinse with fresh water.

  6. 6

Maintain water and advisor-approved nutrients. The KAU schedule replaces one-quarter of water every two weeks and restarts soil/culture after six months.

Safety and inspection

Supplementary feed only. Do not grow feed in contaminated wastewater; manure-based nutrients require hygiene review. Prevent access by children and avoid unapproved pesticides.

Verify the result

Record fresh harvest, dry matter, water use and rejected material. A 2 m² × 0.10 m water-space calculation is 200 L before soil displacement and freeboard.

Measurement log

  • Batch ID/date, seed/crop mass and dry matter, usable harvest, rejected material, water L, electricity kWh, labour time, all costs and laboratory results.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Inspect and clean after each trial following the source method. Record wear, contamination, leaks or loose components; do not restart until the cause is corrected.
  • Use the source’s service intervals and replacement limits. Recheck the result whenever a component, material, input condition or method changes.

Troubleshooting

Mould, unusual deterioration or inconsistent batches
Reject the affected material; inspect seed quality, hygiene, drainage, temperature and storage seals. Correct and repeat a small batch with an advisor.
