Assemble and operate a treatment kit around a documented UV device. A blue-lit bottle in a video does not establish germicidal wavelength or dose.
- 1Source and chemical-risk check
- 2Prefilter and measured clear-water batch
- 3Documented UV cycle, sensors and stirring
- 4Successful cycle and protected storage
Site and operating requirements
- Identify intended use and likely biological, chemical and salt contamination before choosing treatment. Obtain suitable water testing.
- Keep raw-water and treated-water containers, tools and hands separate. Use clean covered storage.
Tools and measuring equipment
- Graduated vessel, timer, clean handling kit, source-specific test equipment and the selected manual’s tools; trained construction for biosand.
Output and operating conditions
Steripen Ultra example only: 0.5 L / 48 s or 1 L / 90 s, with a successful completion indication.
The settings apply only to the named model and its current manual. UV does not desalinate water or remove chemical pollutants.Parts, quantities and dimensions
| Part | Quantity | Specification / dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Documented UV unit | 1 | Ultra or another water-treatment device with its own complete operating instructions. |
| Prefilter and clean measured vessel | 1 each | Clear water, compatible container opening, accurate 0.5/1 L mark for the Ultra example. |
| Charger and covered storage | 1 each | Manufacturer-compatible power supply and a clean bottle reserved for treated water. |
Preparation and component checks
- Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
- Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.
Procedure
- 1
Check the source for chemical contamination. Use an alternative safe source if chemicals are suspected. Charge and inspect the device.
- 2
Prefilter cloudy water and measure a batch within the device’s capacity. Keep dirty hands and container rims away from treated water.
- 3
For Ultra only: press twice for 0.5 L or once for 1 L. Follow the displayed sequence and immerse the lamp and sensor pins as instructed.
- 4
Stir throughout the treatment cycle. Wait for success; a failed or interrupted cycle is not a completed treatment.
- 5
Transfer without recontamination, close the treated-water container, and clean and dry the unit according to its manual.
Safety and inspection
Never bypass sensors or expose an unshielded UV source. Use a purpose-built unit rather than an improvised UV bottle or homemade reaction chamber.
Verify the result
Record model, batch volume, cycle result and maintenance. Particles shield organisms; treatment effectiveness depends on correct device use.
Measurement log
- Source identity, intended use, method/device, batch volume, time, temperatures/flow where relevant, completed treatment indication and laboratory test results.
Maintenance and repeat checks
- Inspect and clean after each trial following the source method. Record wear, contamination, leaks or loose components; do not restart until the cause is corrected.
- Use the source’s service intervals and replacement limits. Recheck the result whenever a component, material, input condition or method changes.
Troubleshooting
- Flow/cycle outside the documented range or failed test
- Do not use the output for drinking. Recheck raw-water quality, batch volume, seals/media/device status and the complete source instructions. Retest after correction.
