Site and operating requirements

  • Survey net head, usable seasonal flow, flood level, debris and legal access. Select a design for that measured resource.
  • Obtain complete shaft, bearing, mounting, guard and electrical drawings. A photograph is not a tolerance or load specification.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Tape/level and safe survey tools, timer and measured collection vessel for suitable small flows, tachometer and rated load/meter set; workshop tools follow the full drawings.

Output and operating conditions

Guide scope: under 5 kW, roughly 2–10 m head. A sizing example uses 2.5 m and 460 L/s with a 360 mm runner at 720 rpm.

Published design conditions, not guaranteed output from those dimensions alone. Flow, turbine losses and manufacturing accuracy determine output.

Preparation and component checks

  • Enter surveyed head/flow into the companion design spreadsheet. Record all input units and keep the resulting runner, blade twist, casing and draft-tube drawings together.
  • Have the fabricator verify jig angles, weld quality, shaft alignment, clearances and balance against the selected design before wet commissioning.

Procedure

  1. 1

Measure seasonal net head and usable flow and compare with the guide’s range.

  2. 2

Select one validated design calculation and use its full geometry; do not mix runner and casing variants.

  3. 3

Use a trained fabrication team for cutting, jigging, welding, alignment and balancing.

  4. 4

Commission against flow, head, electrical output and protection tests and document deviations.

Safety and inspection

A specialist hydro project with substantial water flow; not a beginner build or an installation in an unapproved watercourse.

Verify the result

The authors do not guarantee every locally manufactured turbine. Record the actual power curve and service limits.

Measurement log

  • Design revision, measured head/flow, runner geometry, operating rpm, generator load points and actual output. The 360 mm / 720 rpm example is not a universal setting.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Inspect for debris, abrasion, corrosion and bearing/seal condition only after isolation. Stop and investigate new vibration or output loss before restarting.

Troubleshooting

No output, abnormal heat, noise, vibration or leaks
Stop and isolate first. Check the documented input, load compatibility, alignment and connections; keep guards fitted and refer specialist systems to their installer.
