Root a suitable branch while it remains attached to its parent. Check species suitability, plant health and propagation rights first.

Site and operating requirements

  • Identify crop, season, water quality, soil/medium and local heat. Measure materials before cutting and confirm support and drainage.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Tape, clean hand tools, crop labels, water/soil records and protective equipment for the selected operation.

Output and operating conditions

A rooted clone if successful; time to root, survival and later fruiting vary by species and conditions.

Iowa State example: choose a position about 30–46 cm below the tip and remove a bark ring about 25 mm wide. Species-specific methods can differ.

Parts, quantities and dimensions

PartQuantitySpecification / dimensions
Healthy parent branch1Suitable identified species, reachable branch and appropriate season; do not damage a protected tree or a main structural limb.
Clean tools and damp moss1 setSharp clean knife, gloves and damp sphagnum or species-appropriate rooting medium; a hormone only if locally permitted and labelled for this use.
Wrap, ties and pot1 setMoisture-retaining clear wrap with opaque outer sun protection as needed, soft ties, clean pot and appropriate potting medium.

Preparation and component checks

  • Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
  • Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.

Procedure

  1. 1

Confirm the species can be air-layered and choose a healthy reachable shoot at the correct season. Label the parent and date.

  2. 2

Mark the source-sized ring below the tip. With clean tools remove the bark ring and scrape the exposed cambium as directed without cutting deeply into wood.

  3. 3

Apply only a permitted labelled rooting product if required by the species method. Wrap the wound with damp, not dripping, rooting medium.

  4. 4

Enclose the medium with wrap and tie both ends to retain moisture without girdling the branch. Shield from overheating.

  5. 5

Inspect moisture and visible roots regularly. Wait for an adequate root system; calendar days alone do not prove readiness.

  6. 6

When well rooted, support the branch and cut below the rooted section with clean pruners. Remove wrap gently and pot without stripping roots.

  7. 7

Keep the new plant sheltered with controlled moisture, then acclimatise gradually before final planting.

Safety and inspection

Use gloves and safe knife technique at ground-reachable height. Obtain permission and professional help for valuable or protected trees.

Verify the result

Visible healthy roots, not an online rooting-time promise, determine separation. Cloning does not reproduce a grafted tree’s rootstock properties.

Measurement log

  • Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Check wrap integrity, moisture, fungal rot and branch stress weekly. Do not leave tight ties after rooting.
  • Track parent identity and survival; avoid propagating diseased plants or protected cultivars without permission.

Troubleshooting

Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
