Site and operating requirements

  • Separate waste from feed and drinking water. Record input history, temperature, moisture, runoff and compost quality.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Dedicated gloves, labelled containers, thermometer, moisture checks, cleaning tools and a batch log.

Output and operating conditions

Vermicompost and a contained compost-worm culture. No guaranteed animal-feed yield.

Use a 19–38 L opaque hardware-store storage box. UConn provides the hole-size range; the shallow-box support and tray layout is an original adaptation. Measure the real box before drilling.

Parts, quantities and dimensions

PartQuantitySpecification / dimensions
Known-history opaque storage boxes219–38 L active storage box plus stable catch tray/storage box. Never reuse chemical containers; verify lid and rim fit before drilling.
Vents, screen and spacers1UConn example: 3.2–6.4 mm holes in two upper-side rows and at least 12 lid/bottom holes. Secure fine mesh; do not seal the air gap.
Bedding and identified worms1Fill about one-third to one-half with damp, wrung, fluffed paper/coir. Use the shallow-bin care method.

Preparation and component checks

  • Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
  • Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.

Procedure

  1. 1

Measure the real storage boxes, mark the vents and drain holes, and drill cold with the empty storage box supported. Deburr every hole.

  2. 2

Screen openings, test drainage and make sure the upper storage box cannot tip, fall into the lower one or crush the ventilation gap.

  3. 3

Add damp bedding and identified compost worms. Keep the lid ventilated and shade the entire unit.

  4. 4

Start with small plant-scrap portions, bury and cover. Increase only after consumption is observed.

  5. 5

Inspect the catch tray and internal temperature; storage box cores can overheat or become anaerobic. Split into shallow bins if that occurs.

  6. 6

Harvest by migration into fresh bedding and separate compost, worms and any drainage. Label the output as compost.

Safety and inspection

Do not feed manure-grown or unidentified worms to birds. Worm drainage is untreated wastewater, not a validated liquid fertiliser.

Verify the result

The photo is a reference only. Use shallow accessible boxes and measure internal temperature; leave open air space between supported modules.

Measurement log

  • Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Inspect daily for pooling, flies, heat and compacted bedding. Empty drainage before it reaches the working storage box.
  • Do not stack many loaded storage boxes on unstable blocks or pallets. Keep access for lifting and cleaning.

Troubleshooting

Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
