Raise labelled seedlings or root appropriate cuttings from healthy plants using clean tools and draining media.
- 1Identified seed or healthy parent plant
- 2Clean tools, draining cells and suitable medium
- 3Control light, moisture, temperature and airflow
- 4Confirm roots, transplant and acclimatise
Site and operating requirements
- Identify crop, season, water quality, soil/medium and local heat. Measure materials before cutting and confirm support and drainage.
Tools and measuring equipment
- Tape, clean hand tools, crop labels, water/soil records and protective equipment for the selected operation.
Output and operating conditions
A documented small-scale setup and care record. Results depend on species, climate, water and management; no yield is guaranteed.
NC State general woody-cutting example: 10–15 cm long; remove lower one-third to one-half of leaves. Species and growth stage govern. UMN seed-light example: 12–16 h/day with fixture-specific distance.Parts, quantities and dimensions
| Part | Quantity | Specification / dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Clean cells and rooting containers | 1 set | Draining seed cells or small pots, a catch tray and clean seed-starting/rooting medium. Do not use contaminated garden soil. |
| Seed / healthy parent and labels | 1 batch | Identified viable seed or an appropriate cutting species; label cultivar, source and date. |
| Light and clean hand tools | 1 set | Fixture-compatible timer/light if needed, thermometer, gentle watering and clean pruners; labelled rooting hormone only where appropriate. |
Preparation and component checks
- Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
- Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.
Procedure
- 1
Choose seed or cutting method for the species, local season and propagation rights; prepare labelled clean containers.
- 2
For seeds, moisten the medium and sow at the packet’s depth/spacing. Different seeds need different light and temperature.
- 3
For cuttings, select healthy suitable growth, cut cleanly, remove lower leaves and insert into damp aerated medium with no buried foliage.
- 4
Maintain appropriate moisture with drainage and ventilation; avoid standing water and overheating under covers.
- 5
Inspect emergence or roots and remove diseased material. Adjust light for sturdy growth using fixture instructions.
- 6
Transplant only when adequately rooted; acclimatise gradually to outdoor sun, wind and temperature before final planting.
Safety and inspection
Use locally permitted materials and practices. Obtain competent help for electricity, structures, chemicals, animal health or any unfamiliar operation.
Verify the result
Record the actual components, measured conditions and results. Resolve missing design requirements with the source or a qualified local adviser before expanding.
Measurement log
- Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.
Maintenance and repeat checks
- Record germination, rooting and losses. Clean tools between parent plants and replace suspect medium.
- Do not promise a fixed rooting time or use unlabelled chemical rooting mixtures.
Troubleshooting
- Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
- Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
