Create a draining crop-root space with safe materials and access paths outside the planting area.
- 1Accessible crop-root space; measured reach
- 2Compatible container or safe bed materials
- 3Tested medium, drainage and crop irrigation
- 4Check wet load, moisture and nutrients
Site and operating requirements
- Identify crop, season, water quality, soil/medium and local heat. Measure materials before cutting and confirm support and drainage.
Tools and measuring equipment
- Tape, clean hand tools, crop labels, water/soil records and protective equipment for the selected operation.
Output and operating conditions
A documented small-scale setup and care record. Results depend on species, climate, water and management; no yield is guaranteed.
UMN simple mound example: 15–20 cm high. Width depends on reach; the original small demonstration below uses 1 × 2 m with access from both sides. Raised beds do not remove contaminated soil risk.Parts, quantities and dimensions
| Part | Quantity | Specification / dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Container or bed materials | 1 | Known-history crop-compatible container with drainage, or sound bed edging. Avoid former chemical vessels and unknown treated timber. |
| Suitable root medium | crop sized | Container potting mix or tested bed soil/compost blend; depth must fit the specific crop roots. |
| Water, labels and support | 1 set | Measured irrigation, clean labels and an anchored crop support if required; wet medium adds substantial weight. |
Preparation and component checks
- Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
- Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.
Procedure
- 1
Select crop, light and safe access; check drainage and underlying soil history.
- 2
Choose root volume/depth from crop guidance and keep the bed narrow enough to reach without walking inside it.
- 3
Inspect material compatibility, sharp edges and drainage openings. Review balcony/roof/floor load capacity before placing heavy wet containers.
- 4
Prepare draining medium; do not fill a sealed container or assume gravel alone fixes poor drainage.
- 5
Install irrigation/support, plant at crop spacing and water to settle. Keep crowns and drainage outlets clear.
- 6
Monitor root-zone moisture, settling and nutrient status and adjust from observations and tests.
Safety and inspection
Use locally permitted materials and practices. Obtain competent help for electricity, structures, chemicals, animal health or any unfamiliar operation.
Verify the result
Record the actual components, measured conditions and results. Resolve missing design requirements with the source or a qualified local adviser before expanding.
Measurement log
- Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.
Maintenance and repeat checks
- Containers can dry and overheat rapidly; check actual medium moisture rather than watering by the calendar.
- Renew suitable medium and clean containers between crops; prevent saline drainage entering clean-water storage.
Troubleshooting
- Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
- Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
