Reviewed 17 October 2026 · schematic not to scale
Design a monitored fish–biofilter–plant recirculation system with qualified aquaculture advice. A fish or hive video alone is not evidence of a working integrated farm.
- 1Fish tank, safe feed and separate aeration
- 2Solids removal and established biofilter
- 3Compatible plant beds and return flow
- 4Water tests, backup and stocking limits
Site and operating requirements
- Identify crop, season, water quality, soil/medium and local heat. Measure materials before cutting and confirm support and drainage.
Tools and measuring equipment
- Tape, clean hand tools, crop labels, water/soil records and protective equipment for the selected operation.
Output and operating conditions
A documented small-scale setup and care record. Results depend on species, climate, water and management; no yield is guaranteed.
Tank volume, stocking density, feed rate, biofilter capacity and pump flow must be jointly specified for selected species and temperature. No universal fish-per-litre recipe is provided.Parts, quantities and dimensions
| Part | Quantity | Specification / dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Fish tank, solids filter and plant beds | engineered set | Crop/animal-compatible opaque materials, accessible solids removal, screened fish-safe outlets and adequate support for wet mass. |
| Recirculation, aeration and backup | designed set | Rated pump at actual lift, independent aeration, safe plumbing/overflow and power-outage response. |
| Testing and feed equipment | 1 set | Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temperature and dissolved-oxygen tests, species-appropriate fish feed and a daily log. |
Preparation and component checks
- Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
- Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.
Procedure
- 1
Choose compatible fish/crops with a qualified adviser and confirm local keeping, discharge and food-production requirements.
- 2
Draw tank → solids removal → biofilter → plant beds → return, and mark a separate air supply and all overflows.
- 3
Size every component together from the intended biomass and feed load; obtain reviewed structural, hydraulic and electrical details.
- 4
Assemble and leak-test with clean water and no fish; measure actual flow and verify outage/overflow behaviour.
- 5
Establish biological filtration under expert instructions and confirm measured cycling before normal stocking.
- 6
Stock gradually within the reviewed limits and log feed, fish behaviour, water tests and plant response daily.
Safety and inspection
Use locally permitted materials and practices. Obtain competent help for electricity, structures, chemicals, animal health or any unfamiliar operation.
Verify the result
Record the actual components, measured conditions and results. Resolve missing design requirements with the source or a qualified local adviser before expanding.
Measurement log
- Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.
Maintenance and repeat checks
- Remove solids, inspect roots/filters and maintain independent aeration. Recheck after feed, biomass or temperature changes.
- Never route untreated livestock manure, compost leachate or unapproved pesticides into fish/food-crop water.
Troubleshooting
- Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
- Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
