Site and operating requirements

  • Survey net head, usable seasonal flow, flood level, debris and legal access. Select a design for that measured resource.
  • Obtain complete shaft, bearing, mounting, guard and electrical drawings. A photograph is not a tolerance or load specification.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Tape/level and safe survey tools, timer and measured collection vessel for suitable small flows, tachometer and rated load/meter set; workshop tools follow the full drawings.

Output and operating conditions

Planning relationship: delivered flow ≈ efficiency × drive flow × fall / delivery lift. Most drive water exits the waste valve; this is powered by falling water.

Clemson-specific plan needs about 1.52 m minimum fall and nominal 1¼ in drive pipe; its length range is about 4.9–31.7 m. Use its full design tables, not these figures alone.

Parts, quantities and dimensions

PartQuantitySpecification / dimensions
Intake and anchored drive pipeper planScreened intake, rigid continuous drive pipe, foundation and unobstructed waste drain. Nominal diameter is not measured outside diameter.
Commercial rated valves and fittingsper source BOMPlan includes nominal 1¼ in inlet valve/tee/union, swing waste check and spring delivery check; ¾ in outlet fittings and reducers. Match exact orientation and pressure ratings.
Engineered pressure chamber and gauge1 setClemson lists a 4 in × 24 in chamber and air-filled inner tube with specified rated fittings. Installer must verify surge pressure, current materials and relief requirements. No 3D-printed pressure parts.

Preparation and component checks

  • Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
  • Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.

Procedure

  1. 1

Measure seasonal source flow, vertical fall, delivery lift and route length. Check legal abstraction, water use and downstream waste drainage.

  2. 2

Select one complete Clemson configuration. Have an installer review the pressure design and every component rating before procurement.

  3. 3

Install a screened intake with the source-required submergence and no air-trapping high points in the anchored rigid drive pipe.

  4. 4

Assemble valves, chamber, gauge and delivery line exactly to the reviewed drawing with isolation and safe waste discharge.

  5. 5

Commission using the complete manual and a controlled exclusion area. The installer must check cycling, air cushion, leaks and pressure before opening normal service.

  6. 6

Measure both delivered and wasted water over a timed interval; record lift and drive flow to calculate the actual result.

Safety and inspection

Professional pressure-system consultation is required. Keep people clear of pressure joints; never use a bottle or a printed vessel as an air chamber. Water still requires suitability testing.

Verify the result

Use measured flow and lift, not a viral claim of gallons lifted. A gauge maximum is not a safe operating-pressure specification.

Measurement log

  • Drawing revision, measured dimensions, resource inputs, speed/flow, loaded output, trial duration and every observed fault. Mark unknown values as unmeasured.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Inspect intake screens, anchors, check valves, air cushion and waste drainage routinely and after floods. Isolate and depressurise before service.
  • Provide overflow or controlled delivery arrangements: a closed trough valve can stop cycling and may require a manual restart.

Troubleshooting

No output, abnormal heat, noise, vibration or leaks
Stop and isolate first. Check the documented input, load compatibility, alignment and connections; keep guards fitted and refer specialist systems to their installer.
