Reviewed 17 October 2026 · schematic not to scale
Support climbing vegetables using a measured A-frame, soft ties and bracing. The social reference is a concept, not a structural test.
- 1Two anchored end A-frames; dimensions in guide
- 2Secure ridge and diagonal bracing
- 3Soft plant ties or suitable climbing net
- 4Ground anchors reviewed for local wind and soil
Site and operating requirements
- Identify crop, season, water quality, soil/medium and local heat. Measure materials before cutting and confirm support and drainage.
Tools and measuring equipment
- Tape, clean hand tools, crop labels, water/soil records and protective equipment for the selected operation.
Output and operating conditions
A reusable crop support; no guaranteed crop yield or safe wind load is implied.
Original 2 m long demonstration bay: two end A-frames about 1.2 m apart at ground and about 1.6 m above ground. Actual pole size, embedment and anchors need soil/wind review.Parts, quantities and dimensions
| Part | Quantity | Specification / dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Sound poles | 4 + ridge | Four straight sound legs and a 2 m ridge plus braces. Select length allowing the final exposed height and local anchoring depth; reject split or rotten poles. |
| Braces and ties | 1 set | Outdoor cord or straps with secure lashings, end diagonals, soft plant ties and a crop net if suitable. Do not rely on a single loose apex knot. |
| Tools and site markers | 1 set | Tape, level, hand tools and gloves; identify buried services before any staking. |
Preparation and component checks
- Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
- Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.
Procedure
- 1
Choose crop, row spacing and a position outside walkways. Sketch both end triangles, ridge and diagonal braces with actual pole measurements.
- 2
Obtain anchoring advice for local soil and wind. Published general stakes may be embedded about 46–61 cm; do not assume that depth is adequate for every A-frame.
- 3
Set the two end pairs at the marked width, align tops and fasten the ridge securely.
- 4
Fit end and lengthwise bracing and the reviewed ground anchors. Check wobble before adding netting or plants.
- 5
Attach climbing support with no sharp wire ends. Use loose soft loops around stems and leave room for thickening.
- 6
Guide plants gradually, keep irrigation near roots and inspect the loaded frame after wind and rain.
Safety and inspection
Use competent help for tall, heavy or wind-exposed supports. Keep away from power lines and public paths.
Verify the result
Confirm crop spacing from its growing guide. A-frame dimensions here are a transparent prototype, not copied tested engineering drawings.
Measurement log
- Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.
Maintenance and repeat checks
- Check lashings, ground movement, splits and fruit load weekly; replace deteriorated poles and ties.
- Remove crop debris between seasons and store reusable poles dry. Do not climb or hang equipment on the trellis.
Troubleshooting
- Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
- Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
