Site and operating requirements

  • Confirm species, number, welfare, climate, predator protection and local keeping rules before building.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Tape, drawing and inspection checklist, protected hand tools, cleaning equipment and a thermometer at bird height.

Output and operating conditions

Supplementary greens and enrichment; growth depends on season, area and recovery. It cannot provide an endless complete feed supply.

Original small prototype: a 1 × 0.6 m planted bed with a removable smooth frame. Guard height and openings must be checked against the actual birds; no universal mesh clearance is claimed.

Parts, quantities and dimensions

PartQuantitySpecification / dimensions
Bed and removable guard1Known clean soil or planting mix, drainage, smooth untreated frame and corrosion-resistant guard with secured edges. Exclude leg/head trapping gaps.
Known edible plants1 batchUse locally suitable identified forage/greens approved for the flock; no toxic ornamental plants, treated seed or pesticide residues.
Irrigation and feed station1Clean water, separate species/stage complete feed and a second protected bed for recovery.

Preparation and component checks

  • Read the complete linked method, mark its edition, and create a measured component list and a labelled sketch before starting. Keep experimental changes separate from the published procedure.
  • Prepare the work area and inspect every component. Run the lowest-risk dry or unpowered check before water, heat, moving parts or crop material are introduced.

Procedure

  1. 1

Choose a clean area away from manure runoff and assess shade and irrigation. Keep normal complete feed available.

  2. 2

Build and test a removable guard with rounded secure edges. Check feet, heads and wings cannot become trapped.

  3. 3

Sow identified suitable greens in clean medium, label the batch and irrigate without standing water.

  4. 4

Let plants establish before controlled access. Observe a few birds first and stop if they damage the guard or become trapped.

  5. 5

Rotate access between beds and rest the harvested one until regrowth. Remove contaminated, mouldy or rotting material.

  6. 6

Record crop, area, harvest and feed intake; do not reduce complete feed based on fresh green weight alone.

Safety and inspection

Greens are not a replacement for protein, calcium, vitamins or species-specific feed. Avoid toxic plants and do not use poultry manure to grow immediate feed greens.

Verify the result

Pasture contribution varies by crop and breed. A formulated feed remains the nutrient base for chickens.

Measurement log

  • Date, source materials, measured dimensions, inputs, weather/temperature, care, pests/odour, test results and output. Keep batch and location labels.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Inspect guard edges, plant identity, droppings and water daily. Clean only when birds are excluded.
  • Replace heavily fouled planting material; route waste to managed compost rather than back into feed.

Troubleshooting

Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
