Turn a nutritionist-reviewed feeding requirement into a stock, storage-loss and purchasing plan.

Hands-on timeAbout 1–2 hours for an initial small-farm inventory; weekly updates.
Size and spaceA dry accessible weighing point and organised feed storage.

Site and operating requirements

  • Start with one labelled small batch. Confirm clean input water, crop identity, hygiene, species-specific feed advice and a disposal plan.
  • Measure dry matter and all water, energy, labour and discard costs; fresh weight alone does not prove feed gain.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Scales, calculator and inventory sheet
  • Lot labels and sample bags

Output and operating conditions

Purchased kg = animals × daily kg dry matter × days ÷ feed DM fraction ÷ usable fraction. This is inventory arithmetic, not a balanced ration.

Original arithmetic example: 10 animals ×1 kg DM ×30 days ÷0.90 ÷0.90 ≈370 kg purchased feed. The 1 kg is an assumed input, not a prescription.

Preparation and component checks

  • Obtain a species-appropriate feeding target.
  • Check storage and handling limits before bulk buying.

Procedure

  1. 1

List animal groups and the period to cover, including possible supply delays.

  2. 2

Obtain the daily reviewed dry-matter requirement and the share expected from each feed.

  3. 3

Count and weigh usable stock; separate spoiled or unsuitable material rather than counting it as feed.

  4. 4

Convert each feed from dry matter to as-fed mass using its measured DM fraction.

  5. 5

Include a realistic recorded loss allowance and delivery reserve; compare with usable storage capacity.

  6. 6

Schedule purchases, record daily withdrawals and update the forecast whenever animals, weather or feed quality change.

Ready-to-use checklist

  • Units and DM percentages have been checked.
  • Reserve plan covers delays without unreviewed diet changes.

Safety and inspection

Different species, ages, pregnancy and work require different diets. Do not replace hay with grain, straw or by-products kilogram-for-kilogram without a reviewed formulation.

Verify the result

Weigh actual bales or bags and use laboratory DM where available. Reconcile opening stock plus purchases minus use and waste.

Measurement log

  • Daily use, waste, purchases and remaining stock.
  • DM tests, forecast days remaining and supplier lead time.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Reconcile inventory weekly and inspect lot quality at every use.
  • Keep nutrition decisions separate from cost arithmetic; review alternatives before stock runs out.

Troubleshooting

Mould, unusual deterioration or inconsistent batches
Reject the affected material; inspect seed quality, hygiene, drainage, temperature and storage seals. Correct and repeat a small batch with an advisor.
