Investigate salt buildup and drainage before applying fertiliser, gypsum or extra irrigation water.

Hands-on timeSampling visit plus laboratory turnaround; treatment follows diagnosis.

Site and operating requirements

  • Identify crop, season, water quality, soil/medium and local heat. Measure materials before cutting and confirm support and drainage.

Tools and measuring equipment

  • Soil auger, clean tray and waterproof labels
  • Laboratory forms and optional EC meter

Output and operating conditions

Request water EC and a soil salinity test with the method stated. Water EC, soil 1:5 EC and saturated-paste ECe are not interchangeable.

A diagnostic workflow for arid-region farms, not a universal amendment dose or crop-tolerance threshold.

Parts, quantities and dimensions

PartQuantitySpecification / dimensions
Laboratory-approved sample containersas requestedObtain water and soil sampling instructions before collecting; containers and preservation vary by test.
Clean soil auger and labels1 setRecord depth, location, crop and irrigation history; keep problem areas separate.
Optional calibrated EC meter1Use suitable calibration solution and temperature compensation; confirm units such as dS/m or μS/cm.

Preparation and component checks

  • Arrange the correct laboratory method before sampling.
  • Locate drainage outlets and sensitive receptors.

Procedure

  1. 1

Map salt crust, patchy growth, ponding and changes in water source; record recent fertilisation.

  2. 2

Ask a soil/water laboratory for crop-relevant EC, sodium and related tests and their sampling procedure.

  3. 3

Collect representative root-zone soil exactly as directed, separating different soils or symptoms.

  4. 4

Collect irrigation water in the requested container; label source, date and operating conditions.

  5. 5

Have results interpreted alongside drainage, crop tolerance and actual irrigation distribution.

  6. 6

Apply a site-specific plan, then repeat comparable sampling to check whether salinity is improving.

Ready-to-use checklist

  • A diagnosis separates salinity from sodicity and other causes.
  • The proposed action has a safe drainage route.

Safety and inspection

Do not flush salts into neighbours, groundwater or streams. Leaching requires suitable water and effective drainage; gypsum treats specific sodicity problems, not every saline soil.

Verify the result

Use the same laboratory method over time and interpret results with crop tolerance, sodium risk and site drainage.

Measurement log

  • Sampling depth, method, units and laboratory results.
  • Water source and changes in symptoms after action.

Maintenance and repeat checks

  • Clean and calibrate meters as instructed; store probes properly.
  • Recheck after source changes, heavy fertilisation or persistent crop symptoms.

Troubleshooting

Unexpected decline, pests, odour, poor growth or animal distress
Pause the affected activity, separate suspect material and check the guide’s moisture, heat, hygiene, drainage and care requirements. Get a qualified diagnosis before treatment or reuse.
