A clean insulated plastic cooler, frozen water bottles and a thermometer reduce powered refrigeration demand for short trips.
- 1Measure the trip or job requirements
- 2Choose compatible existing equipment
- 3Dry-run and record actual performance
- 4Pack a backup and clear care instructions
Site and operating requirements
- Measure the purchased components before making a cut template. Mark wet and dry zones, fan guards, drain and accessible stop.
- Use manufacturer-compatible low-voltage equipment and keep the mains power supply outside condensation and spill areas.
Tools and measuring equipment
- Food thermometer and cleaning equipment
Output and operating conditions
Keep perishable foods at 4.4°C or colder. There is no fixed safe ice duration; verify temperature in the actual packed box.
The temperature limit is published food-safety guidance. Box volume and ice quantity depend on load, weather and duration, not a universal recipe.Parts, quantities and dimensions
| Part | Quantity | Specification / dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Insulated plastic cooler | 1 | Cleanable food-contact interior and sound fitted lid. |
| Frozen clean-water bottles or ice packs | as tested | Sealed leak-free containers; leave freezing expansion space. |
| Food-storage thermometer | 1 | Readable around the 4.4°C threshold. |
| Sealed food containers | as needed | Separate raw meat and ready-to-eat food. |
Preparation and component checks
- Choose enough cold source from a prior temperature trial.
- Start with chilled food and frozen packs.
Procedure
- 1
Clean and pre-chill the cooler and food.
- 2
Freeze sealed water bottles or suitable ice packs.
- 3
Pack raw and ready-to-eat foods separately.
- 4
Place the thermometer where it represents food storage temperature.
- 5
Keep the box shaded and open it briefly.
- 6
Track temperature and discard food that has exceeded safe time/temperature limits.
Ready-to-use checklist
- Food is at or below 4.4°C.
- Raw-food leakage is contained.
Safety and inspection
A cool-feeling box does not prove food safety. Separate raw food from ready-to-eat food and keep meltwater from contaminating contents.
Verify the result
Pack a representative load and log thermometer readings through the intended trip duration in similar conditions.
Measurement log
- Temperature and time
- Ice replacement and lid opening frequency
Maintenance and repeat checks
- Wash and dry the interior and lid after every trip.
- Replace damaged seals and cracked food containers.
Troubleshooting
- No output, abnormal heat, noise, vibration or leaks
- Stop and isolate first. Check the documented input, load compatibility, alignment and connections; keep guards fitted and refer specialist systems to their installer.
